Green technology has been sweeping the nation, ranging from water-efficient fixtures to the implementation of solar technology. These upgrades, both large and small, are all designed to help homeowners save money and help the environment by reducing carbon emissions, lowering air pollution, and reducing the impact climate change has on the world around us.
While nearly every city and state has benefitted and started to implement changes in their own way, certain neighborhoods have stood head and shoulders above the rest in terms of the number of homes that have embraced these changes. Often spurred on by friendly legislation that keeps prices low and offers benefits like tax credits, homes with green features can be found everywhere in these areas. Each year, real estate listing giant Redfin compiles a list of the number of homes that are sold with one or more “green” features mentioned in the description.
This year, Orange County, California was one of the most dominant areas on the list, tying the Cleveland, Ohio area by taking three of the top ten spots. If you’re looking to purchase a new home in Southern California, take a look at some of the available listings in these areas and you’ll be able to purchase a home that’s packed with eco-friendly technology to help you save money, often including solar!
Painted Trails – Mission Viejo, CA
The Painted Trails neighborhood, located in the city of Mission Viejo, took the number nine spot on the list. With 56 percent of the homes being listed over the past year featuring green technology and home prices being reasonable compared to many of the surrounding areas, it should come as no surprise that this is a popular area that’s expected to grow significantly. Many of the homes listed were outfitted with solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, and new ENERGY STAR certified appliances. The median sale price of homes with green features was $762,500.
Echo Ridge Village – Ladera Ranch, CA
Echo Ridge Village took the number seven spot on the list, narrowly edging out the Painted Trails neighborhood as well as the Georgetown neighborhood in Seattle, Washington. With 57 percent of all listings advertising green features, there’s a strong chance that any place you look at in this neighborhood is going to be energy and resource-efficient to encourage environmental friendliness. Likewise, with over 300 days of sunshine a year and fairly high electricity rates, it should come as little surprise that it’s also one of the strongest solar markets in the country as well. The median sale price of homes with green features was $729,500.
Baker Ranch – Lake Forest, CA
Coming in at the number-six spot on the list was the Baker Ranch community, located in the city of Lake Forest, CA. A full 58 percent of the homes listed during the 2017 year advertised some form of a green, eco-friendly feature designed to encourage energy-efficiency. Like the other neighborhoods on this list, solar is abundant in this area thanks to a wealth of sunlight and warm weather, and can be extremely beneficial when you consider that many of these homes are well over 2,000 square feet in size. The median sale price of homes with green features in this neighborhood was $1,080,732.
